Given that this happened so soon after purchase, ordinarily I'd return it to the store and get a refund. I know it's the hard drive that's the issue, because switching the cable doesn't work, using a different external hard drive of the same type works fine on the computer, and I tried hooking up the failed hard drive to another computer which didn't recognize it. It can't be a problem with formatting because I reformatted it for the Mac prior to using Time Machine (which itself should show it's formatted properly). The external hard drive has a light appear when you connect it to show it's on, and it makes some initial noises, but then it stops making any noses (light still on) and the computer doesn't recognize it, not even in Disk Utility. After disconnecting it for a short time, it was reconnected and now the computer doesn't recognize it. It was hooked up to the computer and Time Machine made a full backup. Specifically, I've got an external hard drive (Western Digital Passport 1TB if it matters, it connects via USB) that was just purchased from a store. Not sure this is strictly a Mac issue, but as my computer is a Mac I thought I might as well try asking.
